Sustainability, woven into every detail

Thuma House was built thanks to the incredible generosity of private donors who believe in conservation and responsible tourism.

The vision behind it is simple: to give visitors the chance to experience the beauty and wildlife of the reserve, while helping raise essential funds to support the work of Wildlife Action Group Malawi (WAG), the local community and protecting the local cultures.

    • 100% of profits go directly to WAG Malawi’s conservation and community work

    • Fully off-grid, powered by solar energy

    • Small on-site vegetable garden for fresh, low-impact meals

    • Grey water used from the pool to water the garden

    • Locally sourced food produce to reduce packaging and transport miles

    • 100% local staff, creating jobs and building skills

    • Local produce sourced from nearby community projects

    • Built with locally sourced materials and constructed by local builders

    • The house was built with the Malawian culture at its heart (with a touch of Irish charm!)

    • All crafts reflect local culture, all made by local artisans
